In a first for Gujarat, a boy who appeared for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) 2016 examination from the State secured a position among the top five rankers at the national level. Abhilash Mishra who trained at the Sardar Patel Institute of Public Administration (SPIPA) secured the fifth spot in all India ranking, said Director General of SPIPA Dhananjay Dwiwedi. Nandini K.R. of Karnataka bagged the top rank followed by Anmol Sher Singh Bedi and Gopalakrishna Ronanki, at the second and third place, a statement from the Commission said on Wednesday.
The written test for the civil services examination was held in December 2016, followed by interviews for personality test between March and May this year. News of the announcement of UPSC (Mains) Civil Service exam brought cheers at SPIPA as of 42 students who appeared for the exam, 14 students cleared the same. Officials at SPIPA said the list of candidates who appeared for an interview after UPSC Mains results were announced in August last year; those who passed include 11boys and 3 girls. Officials at SPIPA said that last year, around 50 students appeared for the UPSC Mains. Of them, 13 students had passed.
“This year’s result has improved compared to last year as there were more candidates who appeared for UPSC civil services. A number of seats have also remained the same. This means students from SPIPA are doing better,” said Shabana Kureshi, joint director (study) at SPIPA. While Abhilash could not be contacted, SPIPA officials said the student completed a Bachelor of Engineering and was in regular batch 2015-16. He had picked Public Administration as an optional subject. Of the 14 students who passed the exam, six students have studied Bachelor of Technology and the top ranked from Gujarat Abhilash has done Bachelor of Engineering.
Two students from the list have studied Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts. Other educational background includes Bachelor of Dental Surgery, MBBS, BAMS and degree in business administration to mention a few. A total of 1,099 candidates has been recommended for appointment, besides a consolidated Reserve List of 172 candidates. From among the recommended candidates, 500 belong to General Category and 347 to Other Backward Class (OBC). The share of Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates comprises 163 and 80 candidates, respectively. The selected candidates will be placed in vacant positions in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Central Services Group ‘A’ and Group ‘B’.
