 Understanding the syllabus

This is one of the most crucial topics that the candidates should know about the CAT examination. Understanding the syllabus can be only possible by visiting the past CAT exam papers. CAT is segmented into 4 parts.

  • Quantitative Ability
  • Data Interpretation

  • Verbal Ability

The questions asked in the CAT examination is a bit tricky so that not all the students can pass the CAT exam with a good percentile. The candidates should have a good logical thinking part with themselves to easily crack the CAT exam.

  • This decision depends on the candidates appearing for the exams.
  • If they have a lot of time to prepare for their CAT examination then they can join some coaching classes.
  • But if you have a busy day and you don’t have much time then it is advisable to not to join some training classes.
  • Rather study at home from self. Coaching classes will provide only with the guidance of the CAT exams.
  • CAT exams are not that tricky if a person has a positive and quick-thinking capacity.
  • So a person who studied at home can also clear the exam with good percentile.
  • It again depends on the person’s capability. A candidate who has joined some coaching classes won’t be achieving a good percentile than the person who studied at home.

Books and Material for CAT exam

If it is possible then take CAT exam preparation books from some reputed institutes or good coaching classes. The past students can help better with this. In general, there are 2 books that must be referred for the exam. Books are written by Arun Sharma & Sarvesh Varma.

The candidates can refer to both the books whichever they want to. Both books are best in their own way. Mostly the first book is common among the students.

Some students buy both books together to study. But it is not advisable to buy both the books as both the books contain similar content to study. There is no need to increase the books on the shelves.

Two books increase the chances of knowledge required to crack the CAT exam smoothly. If you have limited time then only study one book whichever is possible but if you have time and if you have completed all the syllabus before time then you can refer to the second book also.

There are no books available that cover the entire syllabus correctly. Not any of the books cover the topic for Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning and Verbal Ability.

The candidate can always contact some coaching classes for the study material. They can charge some money for the study material but some won’t even give the materials because it is not in their policy to give the materials to any known- classes member.

For the verbal section, the candidate should read lots and lots of books which will help in increasing the English proficiency as well as the vocabulary. A person cannot learn things by just memorizing the answers or sentences.

A candidate can pass the CAT exam by understanding the ideas behind all the sentences. Reading stories would also work for English proficiency in reading as well as writing.

Book Reading

Before the CAT exams were dependent only on verbal English speaking. Many students and the candidates are good in English speaking. This is because of their family background and the people around them.

These people are very good at English proficiency. But these people can also score bad percentile in the CAT exam. This can be because of their overconfident attitude. But these days, it is more than a general English to Advanced English. A candidate must always be very familiar with English Grammar and Vocabulary.

One way to develop and improve your verbal ability is to start reading books. The books can be comprised of fiction, non-fiction, or anything. A book just is written in English. Reading 4 to 6 books in the preparation would increase the familiarity with English which will indeed help you to score good marks in the CAT exam.

Test Series

There are many websites available on the internet which offer free test series for the students appearing for the CAT examination. The people who join classes will get a test series on a regular basis.

The problem is with the people who don’t join coaching classes and decide to study on their own. These people can also give a test series on the Internet online. Subscribe with one of the free Mock test series available on the internet.

Fix a particular time for the test to say somewhere around on Sunday or any day when you are free. Sit back relax and give the mock test. This test will help you know what are the areas that you have to improve in the CAT exam.
