How to become an IRAS Officer (Indian Railway Accounts Service)

The Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS) is the controller of all the accounts of the railways, i.e. income, expenditures, etc.

Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS) Eligibility

The eligibility criterion for the Indian Railway Accounts Service exam is actually as same as for other services.  If the aspirant qualifies the civil services and gets an allotment to the service according to their rank, then she/he would have to go through specified training.

Indian Railway Accounts Service (IRAS) Recruitment and Training

The Recruitment and Training of IRAS are brought in success by two ways, one by regular Civil Service Exam held by the UPSC commission annually. The second is by promoting the Group ‘B’ officers of Accounts Department already posted in zonal railways to IRAS. The half of the total numbers of IRAS officers are selected by direct recruitment and rest by promoting the Group ‘B’ officers.

The officers recruited through direct recruitment would have to undergo 90weeks guidance program before the orientation into the actual service at several railway zones and other offices. The guidance program agenda consisting of various levels is conducted at NAIR (National Academy of Indian Railways) in Vadodra, LBSNAA (Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration) in Missouri, NDAT (National Academy of Direct Taxes) in Nagpur, NIFM (National Institute of Financial Management) in Faridabad and many more academies for training.

The IRAS officers got to a brief exposure to on-field training at Zonal Railways, Divisions, Constructions branches and manufacturing units of Indian Railways. IRAS officers also would have to undergo the compulsory mid-career guidance program during their serving duration.
