According to the latest notification, the (IRS Officer Salary) Top income tax sleuths are going to get a fixed pay scale of Rs 80,000 per month on par along with a secretary in the Union government and police chiefs.

The proposal, authorizing the improved salary for chief commissioners (CCs) and directors general (DGs) of income tax, was on basis cleared by the Union Cabinet in May when it also approved on the most awaited cadets restructuring of the income tax department.

A top Revenue department officer said, “The decision to upgrade the salaries of these senior ranking officers from Rs 67,000-79,000 to Rs 75,500-80,000 was made by the government on July 19 and it will come into force from today,”.

Well, this is going to be the first time Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officers have been sanctioned the head level of salary and these IT officers would now probably be receiving similar pay on par with secretaries to the government and directors general of police, according to the officer.

A total of 116 CCs and DGs of the tax department are going to get the benefit of this decision who are tasked to collect revenue under the direct taxes category. The government recently permitted a large-scale cadre restructuring of the I-T department and created 20,751 posts, in various ranks, in the I-T department. As per the new blueprint of the I-T in this relation, the number of assessment units of the department is going to be “increased by 1,080 from 3,420 to 4,500 for strengthening the tax administration”. This action is expected to “bring additional revenue of Rs 25,756.04 crore per annum against an expenditure of Rs 449.71 crore per annum”, the new blueprint says.

“The primary objective of the strengthening/restructuring exercise (of the I-T department) is to improve the efficiency of the I-T department, maximise revenue collection and provide better services to the taxpayers, apart from improving career prospects of the employees,” this is what is written in the blueprint or better called the vision document.

UPSC holds the Civil Service Examinations for the selection of IRS Officers. Those candidates who get successful in clearing the written test have to attend personal interviews. Those who pass all these formalities can then be finally recruited to be Indian Revenue Officers. It is as per to their score in the Civil Services Examinations that they are employed. The top-ranked Officers can become Chairperson / Member of the CBDT / CBEC. Down the ladder, at the entry level, they can expect employments as Chief Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners and so on.

Officers of Indian Revenue Services (Income-tax) enter training at their academy at Nagpur. After training, they are recruited as Assistant Commissioners either on assessment or other work.

While the main work of the department is assessment and recovery of direct taxes, the department has perfection list branches known for investigation of tax evasion, statistics, and so on through Assistant Directors (of the same rank as Assistant Commissioners of Income-tax). The Assistant Commissioners/ Deputy Directors, Communication Chief Commissioners turns to be members of Central Board of Direct Taxes. The head of the department is the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes, who is invariably a member of the Indian Revenue Services (Income-tax).

1) Principal Chief Commissioner of Income: Tax Rs. 80,000 (fixed)

2) Chief Commissioner of Income Tax: Rs. 75,500-80,000

3) Principal Commissioner of Income Tax: Rs. 67,000-79,000

4) Commissioner of Income Tax: Rs. 37,400-67,000 + grade pay of Rs. 10,000

5) Additional Commissioner of Income Tax: Rs. 37,400-67,000 + grade pay of Rs. 8,700

6) Joint Commissioner of Income Tax: Rs. 15,600-39,100 + grade pay of Rs. 7,600

7) Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax:  Rs. 15,600-39,100 + grade pay of Rs. 6,600
8) Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax: Rs. 15,600-39,100 + grade pay of Rs.5,400

    have the same authority as on-duty officers?
