Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya – Second IPS Officer of the country

Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya was the first woman Director General of Police in the nation. She is an IPS Officer of the 1973 batch. After Kiran Bedi, she was the second IPS Officer of the country. Her eager to become an officer began when she was the child and she saw her father caught in the property matters. She saw her father be beaten up very brutally. At the time, Police officers were not ready to register an FIR. This same story was shown in the popular serial of 1980s ‘UDAAN’. Kavita Chaudhary who was the lead actor of the show was the sister of Kanchan Chaudhary. The story depicted in the serial was their own real story. Kanchan was the DGP of Uttarakhand.

Her main reason to become a Police officer was to help the people as she don’t want any other person to be beaten up like her father was. She wants that everyone should be able to get help at the time of their needs. She used to spend at least 3 hours of her day to get in acquaintance with the weaker section of the society. On an average, she used to meet 50 people a day. She used to talk to them to understand their problems.

At that time, there was very few women police officer, so there was a very obvious chance of bias nature against the women. Kanchan also fought against this inequality. As the number of women, officer increased over the year.During the communal riot in Lucknow, Kanchan had her sacrament by fire as an Assistant Superintendent of Police. She was always filled with the confidence that even she or any other women officer can do the work like or better than the male counterpart. She said that once we get over this primary fear then very thing automatically falls into its place.

Once when she was doing her duty in Lucknow, a local politician walked into her office and with the threatening look told her that she had come to the place of hooligans. She shouted at that politician and said that it what you are saying is true then I am the worst ruffian and commanded him to get out of her office. She was then warned by her seniors, not to involve with him, but nothing could stop the gusty officer.

There is a need for smiling faces of officers in the police force. She stated that it is very important to change the past image of police in the mind of the people.

The first time she came to police station to join her work she was very hesitated to smile as it seemed like it was the norm in police force that if you smile you are considered to be weak.

Then she told herself that whatever happen she is going to smile and spread a little happiness around her.
