MPPSC 2018: Application, Syllabus, Eligibility, Pattern, Preparation

The State Government of Madhya Pradesh conduct’s the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission (MPPSC) Exam. Popularly known as MPPCS Exam. The MPPCS Exam consists of two papers. First is the General Studies and the Second is the General Aptitude Test.

The MPPCS Prelims Examination is a screening examination, and it is conducted to reduce the number of candidates which can appear in the MPPCS Main Exam. Different posts under MPPSC are

Eligibility Criteria of MPPSC


  • A Candidate must be a citizen of India.

Age Limit for MPPSC:

  • Candidates age limit should be between 21 – 28 years for Dy. Superintendent of Police, Assistant Superintendent Jail & Transportation Sub-Inspector and 21 – 40 years for other posts.

The upper age limit prescribed above will be relaxed able to the following extent:

  • up to a maximum of five years: if a candidate domiciled in Madhya Pradesh belongs to a caste or tribe or other backward class which has been notified as scheduled caste or scheduled tribe or other backward class by the Government of Madhya Pradesh. (up to a maximum of 3 years: if a candidate is a bonafide repatriate of Indian origin from ).
  • Burma, Who migrated to India on or after 1st June 1963.
  • Srilanka; who migrated to India after 1st November 1964.
  • If the candidate is a bonafide displaced person from erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) and had migrated to India during the period between 1st January 1964 and 25th March 1971.
  • If the candidate is a widow, divorced or abandoned at the time of her first appointment will have up to 5 years of relaxation.
  • If the candidate holds a green card in his/her name under the Family Welfare Programme will have up to 2 years of relaxation.
  • Forward-Cast partner of a prize-winning couple under Inter Caste Marriage Scheme sponsored by the Tribal, Harijan, and Backward Class Welfare Department as per GAD Memo No. C-3-10/85/3/1 dated 03-09-1985 will have up to5 years of relaxation.

Educational Qualification:

  • Candidates should possess Graduation or equivalent from a recognized University.
  • Candidates possessing professional and technical qualifications, which are recognized by the State Government as equivalent to a professional or technical degree, would also be eligible for admission to the examination.

MPPSC Paper Pattern for Preliminary Exam

MPPSC Preliminary Exam consists of two papers that are General Studies and General Aptitude Test.

  1. Paper I: General Studies
  2. Paper II: Anyone forms the optional subject

Marks Format:

  1. 1st paper marks are 150.
  2. 2nd paper marks are 300.

Marks Format:

  1. Each paper is of 300 marks.
  2. Duration of Time: 03 hours.

Interview Test: The interview test will carry 250 marks.

Qualifying marks for the interview for unreserved candidates will be at least 33% marks in each paper and candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe/Other Backward Class and Physically Handicapped categories, these minimum qualifying marks would be 23%.

What is the Syllabus of MPPSC?

The General Studies Paper Has the following Syllabus as per the Notification from MPPSC?

General studies (1st paper)

  1. General science and Environment (Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity & Climate Change) will cover general appreciation and understanding of science including matters of everyday observation and experience as may be expected of a well-educated person who has not made a special study of any particular scientific discipline.
  1. Current Events of National & International Importance In the current events knowledge of significant National and the International level will be tested.
  2. History of India and Independent India in History, questions of general knowledge related to social, economic and political aspects will be asked. Also, there will be questions on Indian National Movement and Development of Independent India.

Geography of India

There will be questions of general knowledge relating to Physical, social and economic geography. It will also include questions on Indian Agriculture and Natural resources. There will be questions pertaining to demography and census of India.

General Geographical awareness of the world.

Indian Polity and Economy

Political system and constitution of the country, Panchayati Raj, social system, sustainable economic development, elections, political parties, plans, industrial development, foreign trade and economic and financial institutions.


Important games and sports tournaments, Awards, personalities and Renowned Sports Institutions of M.P., India, Asia and World.

Geography, History and Culture of M.P.

There will be questions related to the development of Mountains, rivers, climate, Flora and Fauna, Minerals transportation in the Geography of Madhya Pradesh. It will also have questions relating to important dynasties of M.P., Contribution of important dynasties in the History & Culture of Madhya Pradesh, There will be questions on Tribal, Arts, Architecture, Fine Arts and Historical personalities of M.P.

Polity and Economy of M.P.

The political system, Political parties and elections, Panchayati Raj, Social system and sustainable economic development of M.P. This will also include questions on Industry, Plans, Economic programmes, business, demography and census of M.P. 9. Information and Communication Technology Questions pertaining to characteristics uses, and terminologies such as website, online, search engine, e-mail, video mail, chatting, video conferencing, hacking, cracking, virus and cybercrime.

  • Scheduled Caste & Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) 1989 (No.33 of 1989) and the Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955 (No. 22 of 1955)
  • The Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.

Second Paper: General Aptitude Test

  1. Comprehension
  2. Interpersonal skill including communication skill
  3. Logical reasoning and analytical ability
  4. Decision making and problem-solving
  5. General mental ability
  6. Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, the order of magnitude etc.-Class X level) Data
  7. Interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc.-Class X level)

Logical Reasoning

  • Understanding the structure of arguments;
  • Evaluating and distinguishing deductive and inductive reasoning;
  • Verbal analogies; Word analogy – Applied analogy;
  • Verbal classification;
  • Reasoning Logical Diagrams: Simple diagrammatic relationship
  • Venn diagram; Analytical Reasoning.

Hindi Language Comprehension Skill (Class X level)

Note: – Question relating to Hindi Language Comprehension skill of Class X level will be tested through passages from Hindi language only without providing English Translation thereof in the question paper

How to prepare for MPPSC?

  • Make your own schedule of study give appropriate time to each and every topic.
  • Read newspaper, magazine etc. To increase your awareness of current affairs just keep eye on reading the various newspaper, watch television for breaking news.
  • Keep yourself up to date. Just go solving previous papers, make habit of marking the key point.
  • Make your own notes so that it will be easy while revising at last moments.
  • Take the help of online assessment it will be better to boost your confidence level.
  • Self-assessment is an important preparation. Plan your studies at least 2 months prior to the exam.
  • Questions can be asked from every nook and corner of the subject and therefore it is not all advisable to omit any chapter or area.
  • Practice as many mock tests as possible in close to examination environment as possible. During preparation avoid the oily food just and avoid anxiety before the exam.
  • MPPSC asks direct questions unlike UPSC so have learned it
  • MPPSC high scoring paper is GS1 part two, GS2, GS3 and GS4 paper is based upon your ability to think.
  • Look into the previous years UPSC Papers pick keywords from there some ques directly come from there. Eg:- There were some ques related to NABARD in UPSC and In MPPSC(pre) they directly asked NABARD stands for.
