NIFT 2020 General Ability Test / Personal Interview / Group Discussion

NIFT is standing for [National Institute of Fashion Technology], In NIFT Examination there are Master Programmes and  Bachelor of Design (B.Des.).

Master Programmes two years of courses. In Master Programmes, there are three types of courses, i.e. Master of Design (M. Des) – Design Space, Master of Fashion Management (M.F.M), and Master of Fashion Technology (M.F.Tech). In NIFT Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) four years courses.

There are six courses which are Accessory Design, Fashion Communication, Fashion Design, Knitwear Design, Leather Design, and Textile Design.

General Ability Test (GAT)

For Bachelor Of Design (B. Des.) and Master of Design (M.Des.): This test will comprise of various sections as given below:-

  • Quantitative Ability
  • Communication Ability
  • English Comprehension
  • Analytical Ability
  • General Knowledge and Current Affairs

The number of questions may vary in each section year to year.

  • Quantitative Ability: This sub-test is designed to test the quantitative ability of the applicant. The sub-test may include questions on Addition, Division, Fractions, Multiplication, Percentage, Rate of Interest, Work and Task, Ratio and Proportion, and Distance.
  • Communication Ability: This sub-test is aimed at testing the language ability of the applicant in day to day communication in English. It includes questions on synonyms, antonyms, words with corresponding meanings, singular, plural, idioms and phrases, one-word substitutes, correct spellings, etc.
  • English Comprehension: This subtest aims to test the applicant ability to comprehend a situation from a given passage, and test of Basic English language.
  • Analytical Ability: This sub-test is designed to test the applicants capacity for the ability of inference and logic from the given information.
  • General Knowledge and Current Affairs: This sub-test is designed to test the candidate’s general knowledge and current affairs.

Creative Ability Test (CAT)

This test is administered to judge the intuitive ability, power of observation in concept development, and design ability of the candidate. An important aspect of the test is the creative and innovative use of color and illustration skills.

General Ability Test (GAT) For Bachelor of Technology (B.F.Tech.), Master of Fashion Management (M.F.M), Master of Design (M.Des.) and Master of Fashion Technology (M.F.Tech.).

  • Quantitative Ability: This sub-test is designed to test the quantitative ability of the applicants. The subtest consists of questions on Addition, Multiplication, Fractions, Percentage, Division, Rate of Interest, Ratio and Proportion, Work and Task, and Distance.
  • Communication Ability and English Comprehension: This sub-test is aimed at testing the language ability of the applicants in day to day communication in English. It includes questions on synonyms, antonyms, words with corresponding meanings, singular, plural, one-word substitutes, correct spellings, idioms, and phrases, comprehends a situation from a given passage, etc.
  • Analytical Ability and Logical Ability: This sub-test is designed to test the applicants capacity for inference and logic from the given information and to evaluate the applicants’ ability to identify the given problem and apply to reason in solving the core issues of the problem. Concepts and practice of creative and lateral thinking are likely to be useful.
  • General Knowledge and Current Affairs: This sub-test is designed to test the candidate’s general knowledge and current affairs.
  • Case Study: This sub-test is based on a situation of an industry environment. It helps to evaluate the candidate’s managerial ability.

M.F Tech will also have some questions from the engineering field. The number of questions may vary in each section and for each course year to year. The level of difficulty in questions for all courses may vary. Shortlisted candidates from the written entrance examination are required to take the Situation test/Group Discussion (GD) / Interview as applicable (except B.F Tech).

Group Discussion

Shortlisted candidates for Masters Programs from the written entrance examination are required to undergo Case Study based Group Discussions (GD) and Personal Interview (PI). GD would comprise approximately 15 to 20 minutes of discussion on a case study assigned, on which a panel of experts will assess the candidates on various parameters including:

  • Conceptual clarity
  • Knowledge of the topic assigned
  • The contribution made to the topic
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Ability to generate new ideas
  • Problem-solving approach
  • Leadership qualities
  • Effective communication

Personal Interview

Candidates shall be evaluated on the various parameters as listed below by a panel, in the Personal Interview:-

  • Career orientation
  • Aptness for the course
  • Overall personal achievements in academics and co-curricular activities
  • Communication
  • General awareness and aptitude, creative and lateral thinking
