It is also known as IIIT Surat and it was established in the year 2017 for those developing Surat as a preferred destination for Information technology associated with the manpower and industry. For the first educational session, classes have been launched from mentor Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat.

Established in 2017 by the Department of Human Resource Development (MHRD), IIIT Surat Gujarat is one of the twenty Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT) set up domestically. The institute operates on a not-for-profit Public Private Partnership foundation and is funded jointly by sector partners as the Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilisers& Chemicals, Gujarat Informatics Limited (GIL), and Gujarat Gas Limited (GAL) along with the State Government. The IIIT in Surat is currently mentored in accordance with the Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) and will continue to be so up to the completion of its new campus.

The academic structure of IIIT Surat was built to address the obstacles encountered by the Indian Information Technology Industry and in the development of the domestic IT market. The institution provides primarily two UG programs in Engineering consisting of the streams – Electronics and Communication Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering. Admission to all these courses will be made on the basis of performance in Entrance Exams such as a JEE Main. On the UG level of education, the IIIT MBA is also offered. Indian Institutes of Information Technology Surat presently offers just the degree of Bachelor of Technology in the field of Information Technology.
