The complete form of IISER is the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, conducted for candidates to provide admission to IISER. The IISER campuses are available in various cities in India, which include Berhampur, Bhopal, Kolkata, Mohali, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram, and Tirupati. There are five years of programs BS-MS conducted for candidates to complete their courses from IISER.

Overall Eligibility criteria

To summarize the overall eligibility criteria for the IAT 2024:

  • Nationality: Applicants must be Indian nationals, PIO, or OCI.
  • Educational Qualification: Candidates must have passed the Class XII or equivalent level examination in 2022, 2023, or 2024 from any board recognized by the Council of Boards of School Education in India (COBSE).
  • Subjects: Candidates must have taken at least three subjects among Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics during their Class XII (or equivalent) examination.
  • Minimum Percentage:
    • Candidates belonging to SC/ST/PwD categories must score a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade in their Class XII (or equivalent) examination.
    • Candidates belonging to other categories must score a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade in their Class XII (or equivalent) examination.
  • Special Case: Students from the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE), from Kashmir division/Winter Zone areas of Jammu division, and the U.T. of Ladakh, who appeared in their Class XII or equivalent level examination in December 2021, are also eligible to apply for the IAT 2024, provided they satisfy all the other eligibility criteria. During the application process, these students must pick 2022 as their year of passing the Class 12 examination.

  • The IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) is the exclusive examination for admission to the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs).

  • Candidates awaiting Class XII (or equivalent) examination results can apply for IAT 2024, but their admission will be subject to fulfilling the minimum eligibility criteria.
  • For candidates who appeared in the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in 2023 and reappeared in any subject in 2024, the better of the two performances will be considered.

Evaluation of Marks:

  • If a board provides aggregate marks considering both Class XI and Class XII, only Class XII (or equivalent) examination marks will be considered.
  • For boards that offer a 3-year diploma or equivalent duration courses, only marks scored in the final year will be considered.
  • For boards following a semester system, marks scored in the final two semesters will be considered.

Handling Letter Grades:

  • If a board awards only letter grades without providing an equivalent percentage, candidates must obtain a certificate from the board specifying the equivalent marks and submit it before the mark-sheet submission deadline.
  • If the board does not provide such a certificate, the percentage marks will be assessed based on a specified method.

The formula to calculate percentage marks is:

where:

  • CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) or CPI (Cumulative Performance Index) is the obtained grade average.
  • PS (Point Scale) is the maximum value of the point scale used by the respective board.

The percentage marks can be calculated using the formula: percentage marks = (CGPA or CPI obtained × 100) / PS, where PS represents the maximum value of the point scale utilized by the respective board.

Reservation Policy

The reservation policies mandated by the Government of India for admission to IISERs are as follows:

  • Scheduled Caste (SC) – 15% of seats
  • Scheduled Tribe (ST) – 7.5% of seats
  • Other Backward Classes belonging to the Non-Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL) – 27% of seats
  • Persons with Disability (PwD) with at least 40% impairment – 5% of seats (supernumerary)
  • Kashmiri Migrants – 3 seats per IISER (supernumerary)
  • Economically Weaker Section (EWS) – up to 10% (as per Government of India rules)

It’s important to note that the EWS/OBC-NCL certificate should be valid for the financial year 2024-25.

Services of a Scribe

As per the office memorandum of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, the following guidelines apply for PwD candidates and those with difficulty in writing for the IISER Aptitude Test:

PwD Candidates:

  • PwD candidates who are visually impaired, dyslexic (severe), have disability in the upper limbs, or have lost fingers/hands preventing them from operating the computer-based test platform may avail the services of a scribe (amanuensis) for the IISER Aptitude Test.

Candidates with Less Than 40% Disability and Difficulty in Writing:

  • Candidates with less than 40% disability and facing difficulty in writing may also avail the services of a scribe (amanuensis).
  • These candidates must upload the “Disability and Difficulty in Writing Certificate” issued by the competent authority.

Application Process:

  • Eligible candidates desiring to avail of the services of a scribe must opt for this during the online application process of IAT 2024.

Consequences of Ineligibility:

  • If it is discovered at any stage that a candidate has availed the services of a scribe but is not eligible to do so, the candidate will be excluded from the evaluation, ranking, and admission process.
  • If such a candidate has already been admitted to any IISER, their admission will be cancelled.
  • The final decision regarding eligibility for availing the services of a scribe will be determined by the medical board constituted by individual IISERs.

Compensatory Time

As per the guidelines for the IISER Aptitude Test, the following provisions apply regarding compensatory time for PwD candidates and those with difficulty in writing:

PwD Candidates with at least 40% Impairment:

  • PwD candidates with disabilities having at least 40% impairment are eligible for one hour of compensatory time in the IISER Aptitude Test.

Persons with Less Than 40% Disability and Difficulty in Writing:

  • Persons with less than 40% disability, covered under Section 2(s) of the RPwD Act, 2016 but not under Section 2(r) of the said Act, are also eligible for one hour of compensatory time.
  • This eligibility is contingent upon the production of a “Disability and Difficulty in Writing Certificate” issued by the competent authority.

Consequences of Ineligibility:

  • If it is discovered at any stage that a candidate has availed compensatory time but is ineligible to do so, the candidate will be excluded from the evaluation, ranking, and admission process.
  • Should such a candidate have already been admitted to any IISER, their admission will be cancelled.
  • The final decision on eligibility for compensatory time will be made by the medical board constituted by individual IISERs.

For OCI/PIO Criteria

OCI/PIO (Overseas Citizen of India/Person of Indian Origin) card holders are eligible to apply for IAT 2024, given that they meet all other eligibility criteria. They will be considered for the unreserved seats.

Foreign Nationals

For candidates who are not citizens of India and do not hold OCI/PIO cards, will be classified as foreign nationals. If eligible to appear for IAT 2024, they are instructed to contact the Chairperson of the Joint Admissions Committee at askjac2024@iiserb.ac.in with the email subject line “Foreign National – Application for IAT 2024”.

IISER Eligibility Criteria 2024

Many candidates may apply to get admission to IISER to complete their various courses, but it depends on their eligibility for admission to IISER.

The candidates have to fulfil the requirements of admission criteria, fellowship programs, board-wise cut-off marks criteria, etc.

Those applicants seeking to get admission to the IISER; can apply online mode via three channels i.e.

State and Central Boards

  • The applicants should be qualifying by Class XII or equivalent examination in the science stream in the year.

Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced)

  • Those candidates aspire to get admission in IISER; they must secure minimum aggregate marks of 60% in class XII or equivalent exams.
  • The applicants need to qualify for JEE Advance and be within the rank of 10,000 in the entrance test.
  • The candidates can get the rank category-wise; for reserved categories (OBCNC, SC, ST, PD), their category rank would be used.
