The Institute was founded on the 6th of August in the year 2008 by the Act of Parliament as an Institute of National Importance. Who is one of eight new IITs established by Ministry of Human Resource and Development of India. The on-campus of the institution is situated in the Patliputra Colony, Patna. The institute has teamed up with various foreign universities like Louisiana University, New South Wales University in Australia.
