Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has a rich history that dates back to the establishment of an Agricultural School in Saidapet, Madras, Tamil Nadu, in 1868, which was later relocated to Coimbatore. In 1920, it became affiliated with Madras University and took on full responsibility for agricultural education and research, significantly contributing to the state’s agricultural advancements. 

The establishment of the Agricultural College and Research Institute in Madurai in 1965 marked the formation of TNAU in 1971. Over the years, TNAU expanded its academic programs and infrastructure. Separate degree programs in B.Sc. (Horticulture) and B.E. (Agriculture) were introduced in 1972, followed by the establishment of the Faculty of Horticulture in 1979 and the B.Sc. (Home Science) program in 1980 at the Madurai campus. Additional agricultural colleges were established in Killikulam (1984) and Kumulur (1989), the latter relocating to Navalur Kuttappattu in 1992.
