It had jurisdiction over Purina, Araria, Kishanganj, and Katihar districts. It was founded by an act of the State Legislature in 2018. Purnea University, Purnia which was carved out of Bhupendra Narayan Mandal University, Madhepura on 18th March 2018 by an act of Bihar Assembly which was notified in Bihar Gazette (Ashadharn) on 17th August 2016 under the Bihar State University Act (BSU ACT 1976) amended under section 3(1) of Bihar Act 23, 1976 and termed the Bihar State Universities Amendment Act 13, 2016.

Nomenclature for the ‘Purnea University’ has originated from the name of the Purneaarea itself. Purnea University is formed to suit the requirements of university education of the Purnea Division spread over four regions in other words, Purnea, Araria, Kishanganj & Katihar. The university envisions becoming a universally acclaimed academic and research institution that will inspire significant transformations in order to assure the holistic growth and development of the culture.

The task of this university is to produce a community of scholars on behalf of best instruction and learning practice around the world, to inculcate in the apprentice ethical, natural and economic topics of knowledge, to provide knowledge-based scientific solutions to satisfy the needs of humanity and industry. Purnea University offers a wide selection or UG/PG programs that suit your aptitude and interests.

Undergraduate Courses:

About 40,000 students have been admitted to every academic session in the courses of B.Sc (Hons) BA (Hons) and B.Com (Hons). We are offering the Online Admission System that is based on the merit of the student as appropriate for the class 12 examination

Vocational Course:

University is offering 25 vocational courses largely at the PG level. Common entrance is being organized by the university to educate students at various courses

Post Graduation and Ph.D. Courses:

University bid PG admission in about 40 PG courses through the advertising and to apply online in both the semesters. We have introduced CBCS systems from the academic session of 2024. We also provide a Ph.D. in 21 courses as per UGC guidelines.

Professional Courses:

The admission for medication for MBBS is done through NEET and PG course guidelines are issued by the university from time to time.

For Undergraduate Engineering Courses the admission is done by the combined test of Bihar state government. For B.Ed. Course the combined test is conducted under the oversight of Raj Bhawan.
