What is a good GATE score out of 100?

Students often wonder what constitutes a favourable rank in the GATE 2023 examination. Generally, achieving a rank below 200 ensures consideration for a PSU (Public Sector Undertaking) job, while a rank below 1,000 increases the likelihood of securing a preferred branch in IITs or NITs.

It is crucial to note that a good GATE score alone does not guarantee a job at a PSU or admission to IITs. Many PSUs and IITs conduct additional rounds, such as interviews and group discussions (GD), during the selection process. Therefore, candidates should prepare for GD and personal interviews (PI) alongside the GATE exam to avoid disappointment, even with a high rank.

Electrical Engineering (EE)

What is GATE Score Validity?

The validity of a GATE score refers to its duration of acceptance for purposes like admission, recruitment, and financial assistance. Typically, GATE scores are valid for three years from the result announcement date.

Candidates can apply for postgraduate programs in engineering and related fields using their GATE scores during this period. Universities and institutions often consider GATE scores a criterion for shortlisting candidates and offering scholarships.

GATE scores are also used by certain public sector undertakings (PSUs) and government organisations for recruitment. Valid GATE scores enable candidates to apply for job opportunities in these organisations.

GATE 2024 Normalization

GATE 2024 Normalization is a process used to account for differences in the difficulty level of papers conducted in multiple sessions during the GATE exam. The aim is to ensure fairness in evaluating the performance of candidates across different sessions. The fundamental assumption behind normalization is that the distribution of abilities among candidates is consistent across all the sessions.

The GATE normalisation formula is used to adjust the scores of candidates based on the relative difficulty level of their specific session compared to the average difficulty level of all sessions. This formula helps to equalize the scores and generate a normalized score that is fair and unbiased. By applying the normalization process, the final scores of candidates are obtained, enabling a fair comparison of their performance regardless of the session they appeared in.

GATE 1 e1687604393450

The GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) score is calculated using a specific formula that considers the raw marks obtained by the candidate in the GATE exam. The GATE score is calculated for each paper separately. Here is the general procedure for calculating the GATE score:

  1. First, the raw marks obtained by the candidate are normalized to remove any variations in difficulty levels across different sessions and papers.
  2. The normalized marks are then used to calculate the GATE score using the formula:

  GATE Score = (M – Mᵠ) * (Sg/Qg) + Sq

  •    – M is the normalized marks obtained by the candidate.
  •    – Mᵠ is the qualifying marks for the paper (usually set as the 25th percentile score of the candidates who appeared in that paper).
  •    – Sg is the score assigned to the maximum marks in the paper.
  •    – Qg is the qualifying marks for the paper (usually set as the qualifying score corresponding to an AIR of 1000).
  •    – Sq is the score assigned to the qualifying marks.

The GATE score is then rounded off to two decimal places.

It’s important to note that the exact values of Mᵠ, Sg, Qg, and Sq can vary from year to year, and are determined by the organizing institute for each GATE exam.

How GATE Score is Calculated

The GATE score is calculated by normalising the marks obtained in the exam. The normalisation process considers the difficulty level of question papers across different sessions. The formula used for calculating the GATE score is:

GATE Score = (Raw Score / Total Marks) x (Maximum Score – Minimum Score) + Minimum Score

After calculating the GATE score, it is further normalised using the formula:

Normalised GATE Score = (GATE Score – Average Score of the Top 0.1% of Candidates) / (Average Score of All Candidates – Average Score of the Top 0.1% of Candidates)

The normalised GATE score ranks and determines admissions, scholarships, and recruitment eligibility. It’s important to note that the details of the normalisation process may vary slightly each year and are determined by the GATE conducting authorities.

GATE 2024 Cut-Off

The GATE 2024 result announcement will accompany the release of subject-wise cutoff marks. Only candidates who meet the cutoff criteria will be considered qualified. The specific cutoff marks for GATE 2024 have not been disclosed yet. However, candidates can refer to the cutoff marks from previous years as a reference until the latest cutoff is made available.

Various factors influence Factors Affecting GATE Cutoff Marks The cutoff marks for GATE. These factors can vary each year and across different subjects. Some of the critical factors that affect GATE cutoff marks are

  • Difficulty Level: The difficulty level of the GATE question paper affects the cutoff marks. More challenging papers may result in lower cutoff marks and vice versa.
  • Number of Applicants: The number of candidates impacts the cutoff marks. Higher competition due to a larger applicant pool tends to raise the cutoff marks.
  • Several Seats/Positions: The availability of seats or positions affects the cutoff marks. Limited seats or positions may lead to higher cutoff marks to select the most qualified candidates.
  • Reservation Policy: Institutions and organisations implement reservation policies that can affect the cutoff marks. Different categories may have separate cutoff marks based on the reservation policy.
  • Performance of Candidates: The overall performance of candidates influences the cutoff marks. Exceptional performance may result in higher cutoff marks.

GATE 2024 College Predictor

A GATE College Predictor is a tool that helps candidates estimate the colleges or institutions they may get admission to based on their GATE score. Considering the previous year’s cutoff scores, the candidate’s GATE score, and other factors, it generates a list of potential colleges for admission.

To use the GATE College Predictor, candidates input their GATE score, category, preferred specialisation, and related details. The predictor uses historical data and cutoff trends to generate a list of colleges that match the candidate’s profile.

It’s important to remember that the GATE College Predictor provides an estimation and should be used as a reference. Actual admission processes and cutoffs can vary each year, and the colleges or institutions make final decisions based on their specific criteria and policies.

GATE Marks vs Rank

  • Since the admission cut-off for GATE is released in the form of opening and closing ranks, it is essential to get an idea about the GATE marks vs rank analysis.
  • The table below covers the expected GATE Marks vs Rank analysis to help candidates know their expected rank for top branches such as CS, EE, EC, ME, CE, etc.

GATE Colleges Accepting Low Scores

While the cutoff scores for admission to colleges through GATE can vary yearly, some colleges may accept relatively lower GATE scores than others. It’s important to note that admission criteria and cutoffs can change, so it’s always recommended to refer to the official websites of the respective colleges for the most accurate and up-to-date information. Some colleges have historically accepted lower GATE scouts:

  • National Institute of Technology (NIT) – These institutes offer M.Teit’srograms. They may have specific seats reserved for candidates with lower GATE scores.
  • State Government Universities/Colleges – Some state-level universities or colleges may offer M.Tech programs and consider candidates with lower GATE scores.
  • Self-Financing/Private Institutes – Certain private or self-financing institutes may have their admission criteria and could consider candidates with lower GATE scores.
  • Universities/Institutes in less popular specialisations – Some universities or institutes may have less competition for specific specialisations, and thus they may accept candidates with relatively lower GATE scores.
