UGC NET 2024 Eligibility Criteria

UGC NET 2024 Eligibility Criteria are required to be checked before applying the application form. Candidates who hold a Master’s degree in disciplines such as Humanities and Social Sciences (including languages), Computer Science and Applications, Electronic Science, etc., with a minimum of 55% marks from universities or institutions recognised by the UGC (University Grants Commission) or equivalent bodies are eligible to apply for UGC NET 2024. However, for candidates belonging to the OBC/ SC/ ST/ PWD/ Transgender categories, a minimum of 50% marks in their Master’s degree is required to be eligible for UGC NET 2024.

Nationality

Candidates must be Indian nationals. However, there is no restriction on the nationality of candidates applying for the Assistant Professor only.

Age Limit

There is no upper age limit for candidates appearing for the UGC NET examination for the post of Assistant Professor. 

However, the maximum age limit for candidates applying for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) is 30 years as of the UGC NET examination date. Age relaxation is applicable for reserved category candidates as per government norms.

Relaxation

Age relaxation is provided to candidates from different categories:

  • OBC-NCL (Non-Creamy Layer): Up to 3 years of relaxation in the upper age limit.
  • SC/ ST/ PWD/ Transgender: Up to 5 years relaxation in the upper age limit.

Qualifying Examination

Candidates must have completed a Master’s degree or equivalent from universities or institutions recognised by the UGC. The qualifying percentage of marks varies according to the category:

The UGC NET exam follows the reservation policy of the Government of India. This policy applies to Central Universities and Institutions considered as Universities. The reservation percentages are as follows:

  • 10% of seats are reserved for the General-Economically Weaker Section (GEN-EWS) category.
  • 15% of seats are reserved for the Scheduled Caste (SC) category.
  • 7.5% of seats are reserved for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category.
  • 27% of seats are reserved for the Other Backward Classes belonging to the Non Creamy layer (OBC-NCL) category.
  • Each category also has 4% horizontal reservations for Persons with Disabilities (PwD) as defined in the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 (RPwD Act, 2016).

UGC NET 2024 Exam Pattern

According to the UGC NET 2024 exam pattern, the examination will comprise two papers. Both papers will consist of multiple-choice questions (MCQs). There will be no break between the papers. Importantly, there is no negative marking provision, meaning no marks will be deducted for incorrect answers. Each correct response will be awarded 2 marks. The total duration of the examination will be 3 hours.
