The Medical Council of India, MCI screening test is also known as Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE). This (FMGE) Foreign Medical Graduates Examination is been conducted by the National Board of Examination by the Government of India in the year of 1975.

This FMGE screening test has been introduced by the screening test regulation of 2002. The screening test is part of the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE). Every student having a degree from Medical Council of India (MCI) which recognized medical university from abroad need to give a licensing test which is named as FMGE means Foreign Medical Graduates Examination or MCI screening test.

Medical schools have been listed in the World Health Organization (WHO) international directory of Medical schools. As per the screening test regulation of 2002, an Indian citizen processing a primary medical qualification awarded by any medical institution outside of India who is desirous of getting provisional or get permanent registration with the MCI or by the State Medical Council on or after 15 March 2002 shall have to qualify the Foreign Medical Graduate (FMGE) examination (screening test).

The Medical Council of India for the screening test is annually been conducted twice in a year to give foreign Medical Graduates Examination to the candidates in the month of June and in December.

The candidates would return back on their completion of the MBBS course in the month of June every year and they generally go back to the crash course of MCI screening test up to the month of September.

The legality of the examination was challenged in the Indian courts and then was upheld in the supreme court of India in the year of 2009.

This screening test has been generating heated discussion with calming that it is unfair and having enough transparency for example, not allowing the candidates to retain their question paper after the examination, or not showing the exact marks and answer sheet upon appeal for failure.
