Leaving a highly paid job, IAS C M Saikanth Varma secured 18th rank in UPSC CSE 2014 and made his decision fruitful. He hails from Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh.

Study strategy by IAS C M Saikanth Varma:

Saikanth succeeds to achieve his goal in his very first attempt. Not a very exhaustive study hours but as per his time and need to study, sometimes for 7-8 hours or someday without study at all. After quitting a job he has joined RC Study Circle for GS – Hyderabad coaching institute for his preparation.

Being big movie buff, his study did not restrain him from watching the movies. He did not keep himself locked in a room for study but did other activities also.

For Prelims, he joined CareerLauncher test series.
For GS Mains, he joined Sri Chaitanya Test Series at Hyderabad and took tests of “the-most-famous-test-series-of-Delhi” at his home itself, by taking the question papers and model answers from one of his friends. he found both of them to be extremely useful.

For current affairs, he used to read two newspapers – The Hindu and Indian Express online. The magazines helped him are Frontline (online), DownToEarth (online), Yojana (selectively), idsa (selectively). Also, he made his notes online on Google docs.

Optional subject strategy:

Being a mathematics student, Saikanth preferred to choose mathematics as his optional. So he took guidance for the subject at Analog IAS for optional (Mathematics) – Hyderabad. He says no subject is easy or difficult but is up to the candidate’s interest level in that particular subject.

He gives his strategy for maths as,

  • Focused on finishing the syllabus, including for Paper II
  • Stressed on Paper II as the scores in it have historically being higher than in Paper I
  • Continuous revision and practice.

Use of internet:

Most of his learning was from the internet. UPSC has made the exam so dynamic that the internet has become indispensable. This is also defeating the coaching institutes.

Interview experience:

Saikanth faced  Kilemsungla panel.

He says he found the panel very cordial and more informal which he was not expected to be. Most of the questions he has been asked about his background.

As being from IT background he has been asked about so called India’s silicon valley i.e. benglore and  its problems and issues. Panel also asked him about concept of bitcoin which was in the news , PM Modi’s visit to Mongolia country, Presidential form of government.

Tips to UPSC aspirants:

Test series is extremely important. Only 50% of learning comes from reading, remaining 50% of learning comes from writing tests. More than writing one answer per day, it would be much better to write a full exam (20-25 questions) within 3 hours.
