IAS Officer Salary in 2021: Facilities, Gross Salary, Grade Pay

The salary that an IAS/IPS/IFS officer gets on joining is around 45k gross, and it comes to around 37/38k in hand. Unlike others, I very firmly believe that one should ask and know all there is about such a job too.

It does not matter what the situation, you will have a family and you will need to take care of stuff. Please do know everything about such jobs too. The quotations and motivations are helpful for preparation; post-selection is a different matter and these things matter.

Not everyone wishes to work in the private sector. There are some peoples who want to join government services for serving billions of people in its nation.

The Salary of government services in India is considered very low; many brilliant students ignore government jobs for a low salary. But when we talk about becoming an IAS it’s not just about salary, it is not a job to make crores of rupees, but it is a job of serving our nation and its 1,267,401,849+ people.

Salary of an IAS Officer as per 7th pay commission recommendation

The seventh pay commission recommended a hike of 14.27% in basic pay. The annual increment rate retained at 3%.

The basic pay of all Civil Servants (Group A) are the same (Pay Level 10).

On 29th June 2016 7th Pay Commission recommendations are approved by Cabinet. Now the basic salary for junior level IAS officers is Rs. 56100.

Allowances like House Rent Allowance (HRA) and Travel Allowance (TA) cannot be claimed since IAS officers provided with Government Accommodation and vehicle. The pay will increase by getting increment year after year. The basic salary of Cabinet Secretary is fixed at Rs.2,50,000.

Payscale: ₹ 15,600-39,100

Years of service: 4 years (approx)

Post: SDM (Sub Divisional Magistrate ), SDO or Sub-Collector.

2) Senior time scale:

Payscale: ₹ 15,600-39,100

Grade pay: ₹ 6,600

Years of service: 5 years (approx)

Post: District Magistrate (DM) or Collector or a Joint Secretary of a Government ministry.

3) Junior administrative grade:

Payscale: ₹ 15,600-39,100

Grade pay: ₹ 7,600

Years of service: 9 years (approx)

Post: special secretary and various Head of the Government Departments.

4) Selection grade:

Payscale: ₹ 37,400-67,000

Grade pay: ₹ 8,700

Years of service: 12 to 15 years (approx)

Post: Secretary to a Ministry.

5) Super time scale:

The highest basic salary is Rs. 80,000 (fixed) for an IAS.

What is the salary of an IAS officer after the 7th Pay Commission?

As per the 7th pay commission, the following is the pay scale distribution:

  • Junior Scale: Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,50,000 along with grade pay of Rs 16,500
  • Senior Time Scale: Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,50,001 along with grade pay of Rs 20,000
  • Junior Administrative Grade: Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,50,002 along with grade pay of Rs 20,000
  • Selection Grade: Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 2,00,000 along with grade pay of Rs 26,000
  • Super Time Scale: Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 2,00,000 along with grade pay of Rs 30,000
  • Above Super Time Scale: Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 2,00,000 along with grade pay of Rs 30,000
  • Apex Scale: Rs 12,25,000 (fixed)
  • Cabinet Secretary Grade: Rs 12,25,000 (fixed)

4. Higher Administrative Grade (HAG) 67000-79000)

7. Selection Grade 37,400-67,000 ( after 13 years) plus grade Pay of 8700

In order to know their exact take-home salary, you must use the following additional information.
1. The officers get a 3% increment every year in the month of July on their Basic Pay plus Grade Pay. So the starting salary of an IAS/IRS officers shall be (Rs 15600 + Rs 5400) + DA @ 120% = Rs 46200. Most officers retire at Apex Scale of Rs 80,000 and their take-home salary is around Rs 176000.
2. The Cabinet Secretary is usually only from IAS and there is only one post of this rank in the country.
3. The IAS and IFS officers do get extra increment for their scales at lower positions (Sl No 7,8 and 9) as compared to their other counterparts.
4. The IPS and IFS officers have an additional pay scale (DIG level) between so no 5 and 6 for Grade Pay 8900.
5. The officers get these scales as they are promoted in their cadres. The promotion is fast in IAS/IFS and IAAS and slower in other services.

HRA and Transport Allowance for Central Government Employees as recommended by 7th Pay Commission

HRA @ 24 percent, 16, percent and 8 percent has been proposed for X, Y, and Z class cities respectively. 7th Pay Commission has also recommended for enhancement of HRA while DA crosses 50% and 100%. As far as Transport Allowance is concerned, there is no increase.

DA @ 125% has been merged with the existing Transport Allowance.
7th Pay Commission discontinued the Pay Band – Grade Pay System which existed before.


1. Most officers generally obtain an official vehicle from the first day of publication. If they do not, they get a transportation allowance to keep a vehicle
2. They receive government accommodation according to their law, which is generally good enough to meet their needs.
3. Obtain a CTL every two years.
4. Receive free medical care for themselves and the family
5. The previously appointed officials also receive a pension (if they retire after 20 years), or 50% of the last remuneration established by them. This pension continues until the end of the life of the government agent, and 50% is later transferred to the spouse until death.
