Varjeet, son of a Punjabi Jagran editor Varinder Walia, is currently training with the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS). Varjeet Walia, 26, of Jalandhar, ranked 21st on the exams of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

Talking to HT over the phone, Varjeet said it was like a dream come true for him as he prepared for the UPSC exams since he finished college.

Varjeet, who did his BTech in Chemical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, is now eager to make a difference in society.

“The IAS badge gives you the power to contribute to society and work for growth, I want to make a difference in people’s lives,” Varjeet said.

Varjeet, the first member of the family to clean UPSC, said he was inspired by his peer group to prepare for the exams.

On his first attempt in 2015-16, he scored 577 points on the UPSC exams.

Varjeet advised students to prepare for UPSC to work hard and leave the rest to luck.

Father Varinder Walia said that Varjeet had always prided him.

“He works very hard and it’s a proud moment for our family,” Varinder said.
